A Letter from Our Founder
A letter from Cecil R. Webster Jr., MD, founder of Webster Clinic, a psychiatry practice in Boston’s Back Bay.
After a dozen years in solo practice here in the heart of Boston, I would often get calls with a familiar ring: a parent whose son was the only Black boy in his competitive school; a college freshman who went home at Thanksgiving a different kid; a successful mid-career professional stuck between her parents’ culture and her own.
They were well past tips or toolboxes, and had outpaced the well-intentioned opinions of friends and AI chatbots. They required something deeper, something enduring, and a reliable place where they could feel seen. This had always been central to my practice, a practice polished through many years of learning and leading at storied institutions, but one that had begun long before, with my grandmother.
The summer I was seven, my grandmother, one of the few Black nurses in rural Texas, let me come along on her night shifts at the nursing home where she worked. Before we walked into each room, she’d pause in the doorframe and tell me who we were about to meet. She’d whisper that the woman lightly chuckling at her television screen never missed “Dallas,” on account of that J.R. Ewing. The character reminded her of her late husband. My grandmother explained that she planned to give her extra pillows after the show, because breathing was hard for her some nights. Although the years have fogged the details of each resident, what has stayed with me is that patient care is never just about the chart or the medicines. Decades later, I still pause at the door and ask myself who I’m about to meet.
That pause is what that parent, that student, and that professional were looking for, so I built a place around it. In 2025, Webster Clinic opened her doors. My grandmother’s extra pillows are deep sofas now. Dollhouses await creative play of children, and the rooms glow enlivened by the work. We embrace those at the margins of identity, on the cusp of a major life change, or just wanting more depth than they have found elsewhere.
At Webster Clinic, children, teenagers, and adults are welcomed into an environment where psychotherapy is at the center, and where medication aids when warranted. With your permission, we talk to your ex-spouse when your college-age daughter needs it, your obstetrician when we need to consider your ADHD medications, and your child’s school advisor when we need to dig deeper to protect your child. We work slowly, reliably, and for as long as is useful. Ultimately, we’d like for the work and your investment in yourself to continue to bear fruit long after your last appointment.
There’s space for you here.
Warmly,
Cecil R. Webster, Jr., MD
